Escape the Room is a group destination that is unlike any other experience. Instead of sitting and waiting for an event to start or having a traditional dinner or team-building exercise, Escape the Room offers something dramatically different.
In an Escape the Room experience you, your date, friends, co-workers, family members, or complete strangers will participate in a 60-minute, fast-paced, exciting adventure where it is you and your group working against the clock to escape the room you are held within. Throughout your experience, you will be faced with puzzles, riddles, and be in charge of finding clues that build on one another to ultimately escape the room!
During your experience at Escape the Room, you will be met by an Escape the Room host who will guide you through the experience. At most locations your host will help you with the basics of the room, such as if you need to leave, if you are having technical difficulties, and of course explaining the process to you, but all other milestones, benchmarks, and clue solving situations will be up to you and your group to solve. Which begs the question, do you tip at Escape Rooms?
What does an Escape the Room host do?
Now that we know a little more about what an Escape the Room is, what is the role of an Escape the Room host or hostess? First, there are typical clerical, administrative activities an Escape the Room host will take care of, such as booking your appointment, following up with your date and time with reminders, answering any questions you have regarding Escape the Room, and organizing the set up before you step foot in the facility.
Likewise, the host or hostess is in charge of guiding your experience. This can mean they go over the rules and regulations with you at the facility, alongside going along with you every step of the way. To go into more detail, the host will be ready, willing, and able to help you in any way possible during your game. It is not typical for a host or hostess to go back behind the desk and twiddle their thumbs waiting for you to escape. Instead, the host or hostess will be with you giving you a great experience without giving away answers.
Just as you would tip a waiter or waitress who stops by the table every now and again, you will want to tip your Escape the Room host or hostess. It isn’t customary not to tip in the United States, especially if the person you have been interacting with is helpful in your process. You likely won’t tip 20% as you would in a restaurant, but it is customary and polite to thank your host with a few dollars each.
